Installation of Linux/ubuntu OS in Windows

(Dual Boot)

Myself, Anji Babu Kapakayala, research student at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur,India. I have attempted here to give short and brief procedure on installation of operating system in already existed OS as dual boot.you are most welcome to give any suggestions or comments below of this blog.

Well, Before going to install any linux/ubuntu operating system in your windows laptop/desktop as a dual boot (secondary OS) ,make sure that you should have at least 100 GB ( 100000 MB) free volume.

If not, you have to make free volume of at least 100GB manually from the any other existed volume which is more than 250 GB  by choosing from disc management. If so , you can follow the below steps to make new free volume from already existed volume in your windows 7/8 machine.

Open disc management settings just by giving right click on 'mycomputer'. And select any of the volume except volume C (because your windows has installed in volume C) which is at least 250 GB in size from disc management setting window. Then choose Shrink volume ,by giving right click on selected volume and make available space  100GB (100000 MB) and hit the  shrink option to make partition .The disc management tab will looks like below picture attached.

In short, let say for example , if you want to  selected volume E which is 250 GB around in size.now do the following steps,
  • Give right click on the mycomputer
  • open Disc Management settings
  • select volume E and give right click
  • choose shrink volume
  •  make available space by specifying the size 100GB i.e (100000 MB)
  • shrink
100 GB free space is allotted ,here you can install your secondary operating system.

You have to make some changes in settings of your windows laptop/desktop for smooth installation of linux/ubuntu as a secondary operating system. Follow the few bellow steps to make changes in settings in windows laptop/desktop.
  • open control pannel
  • click on hardware and sounds
  • then click on Power options
  • Choose what closing the lid does
  • click on change the settings that currently available
Then make few changes in bottom , i.e  Shutdown settings

  • Turn off the fast startup
  • save changes
Restart your PC and watch the screen for a message that says press Del key to enter BIOS setup. Usually it is the Del key, but it can also be F10 (hp) or F2 (dell/lenovo) . You will have to press the key as soon as you see the message on the screen. If you don’t, Windows will start loading and you will have to restart your PC to press the key again.
From the above picture, there is option security, now you should  disable the security booting option from the security in BIOS Boot Menu.

In shortly,
  • Restart laptop
  • press f10 (hp) , f2 (Dell & lenovo )
  • use arrows and disable the security booting.
Now, your windows laptop is ready to install linux/ubuntu as a secondary OS.

INSTALLATION of Secondary OS (Linux/Ubuntu):

Now you can insert your bootable pendrive or CD/DVD in your laptop/desktop and restart the laptop. Press  f9 for hp laptop or f12 for dell/lenovo laptop to open BOOT manger, then choose your pendrive (USB) /CD/DVD in boot manger and click enter. New Ubuntu/Linux installation page will open, now you can click on Install Ubuntu/Linux os to start installation process or if you want to try without installation click on Try ubuntu/linux os this process is called live booting.

Make sure  that your pendrive/CD/DVD is bootable before attempting installation ,otherwise you may end up with some errors. Well, no need to worry if your pendrive is not bootable, click here (rufus) to know more about how to make it bootable. You can start your installation procedure once your pendrive is ready.

Let's say ,for example think that we are going to install ubuntu in our windows-7 lapto/desktop. follow the below procedure to install the OS.
  • Put bootable pendrive/CD/DVD into yoyr laptop.
  • Restart the laptop and while restarting press f9 (hp) or f12 (dell/lenovo) for opening Boot manager.
  • Choose your pendrive (USB) and ENTER.
  • Click on INSTALL UBUNTU in newly opened installation page.
  • Choose langueage as English (USA) and click continue.
  • check the Something else option and hit continue. (don't select the install ubuntu longsite).
Once you hit the continue option in above option , the disc partion manager will open , here you will have to mount the free volume (100 GB ) which you have allotted erlier in windows. Choose the free space which you have created erlier (size may show now as 99374 MB) and double click on it (or) you can click on  a option in bottom of page as +/change .The Disc Partition Manager looks like this.

Then new tab called 'create new partition' will open to allot spaces , here you can allot some space for /swap area and you can use remaining space to install ubuntu (/home).change the following settings in newly opened tab. we will have to allot 8GB at least for /swap area.after opening new tab it will show you 99374 MB, So you can allot 91 ( GB as primary (/home) and remaining 8 GB will be used as /swap area.

Follow below  steps to create new partition  .

  • Click on +/change option in bottom of partition manager.
  • change the following settings in create new partition tab:
  • Check the type for new partition is Primary
  • Enter new partition Size in MB :   91374 MB (you are alloting 91 GB to /home to install ubuntu)
  • Check location for the new partition is beginning .
  • Use as : Ext4 journaling file system
  • Mount point : /home and click ok.
After creating /home partition, your 91374 MB will be mounted as something like /dev/sda6/ext4------------91374 MB.Next step is to create another partition for /swap area, same as above just double click on free space (8GB) and make following settings exactly as above.
  • Check type for new partition is Logical.
  • New partition size : 8000 MB (8 GB).
  • Location for new partition : Beginning
  • Use as : /swap area
  • Mount point : /swap and click ok.
Note: Many of you may have doubt about how much space should be allotted for swap area.Well, allotting swap area is depends on  RAM of your laptop/desktop. lets have a look at the picture attached below to get more info on this.

Well , coming back to our installation ,you should choose the volume to install (choose /dev/sda6/ext4------------91374 MB )here and click on Install now.

Next step is to set your user name and password , click on continue after filling your login details. After this point no need to select anything (that means most of the options are default ). but you may have to select place and time once ,after that just click on continue option when ever it asks. It may take quite long time to finish installation process, and finally click on finish option after completion of installation.

If all of the above said process has done successfully without any errors, it indicates your installation is successful.

Congratulations ! Now you can restart your laptop to use your new linux operating system .But you will have to select UBUNTU OS from WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER manually, please have a look at below picture to get idea on this .

Cheers !!!
